Tonight Tiësto plays to 15,000 dance enthusiasts and music fans in the Baltic State. Already this week the legendary Dutch DJ has wowed the Balearic masses at his summer-long Monday residency at Privilege. Tomorrow he’s off to Italy. The day after, Greece.

This is very much business as usual for Tiësto, the ultra-busy DJ who turned the playing of trance music into an artform and whose achievements are unsurpassed.

Inspired by the likes of U2, he invested heavily in the live aspect of his sets, employing his own sound, light and visual crews, creating arena-friendly dance music spectaculars. In 1997 he formed his own label, Black Hole Recordings, to release both the records he made himself and ones made by likeminded electronica visionaries. He has been nominated for a Grammy, had worldwide hit singles (his remix of Delerium’s Silence featuring Sarah McLachlan; Dance4Life featuring Faithless’s Maxi Jazz), performed at the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics with music he composed especially for the occasion, wowed the rock festival crowds at Coachella, and remixed the likes of The Killers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bloc Party. He is, in short, the biggest DJ in the world.

‘Because people care,’ is Tiësto’s response when asked to account for his huge success, ‘and they see that I care. I’m very honest in what I do. It’s not an act or a gimmick. It’s pure, it’s emotion.’

When you see me DJ you know I feel it and I love what I do. The real thing. When you see me play you know you are seeing someone who plays not because he has to but because he loves it. For this champion of the people, it’s not just about his undeniable ability to create a party in any venue, large or small, in any place in the world, but also about how the music moves people. Makes them feel something. People write letters saying, ‘I was going through a bad period but your music and your show made me feel good.’

But 2009 is also very much about business as usual for Tiësto. After a run of four top-selling electronic artist albums, the electronic pioneer has made Kaleidoscope, an artist album in the truest sense: a stunning collection of songs written and recorded in collaboration with a variety of music talents from the worlds of dance, pop and rock: Jónsi Birgisson from Sigur Rós, Kele Okereke from Bloc Party, Nelly Furtado, Calvin Harris, Emily Haines from Metric, to name a few. Having made the DJ performance an artform, Tiësto has now made the dance album an artform.

‘The starting point was to work with different artists that I liked,’ Tiësto explains, ‘it was as simple as that. ‘Sigur Rós make beautiful music. Bloc Party are fantastic and exciting and innovative. But the hardest thing initially was to get those kind of people to collaborate. They don’t work with dance artists as a rule, and especially not a dance DJ, but when we started producing these tracks, I was surprised at how well the styles work together.’

Once the artists had seen YouTube clips of Tiësto’s crowd-wowing performances, like the one of him playing in front of 250.000 people on the beach in Brazil, and once they’d heard the tracks he’d been writing, they all jumped at the chance.

First on board were Tegan and Sara, the Canadian indie duo and twin sisters. Tiësto had remixed their single ‘Back In Your Head’, and in June 2008 they met in Vancouver. ‘I realised what great songwriters they are – I gave them a track to write on and they did an amazing job.’ In his home studio in his hometown of Breda in Holland, Tiësto set to work finessing the collaboration. ‘Feel It In My Bones’ is the result, an epic, shimmering floorfiller.

Soon the songs were pouring in. Nelly Furtado and Tiësto started off as mutual admirers, but after making her way to Tiësto’s performance at the 2008 Miami Winter Music Conference (she’d come along with her producer Timbaland) Furtado instantly agreed to be involved, and a few weeks later she gave Tiësto an idea for a song that would become, ‘Who Wants To Be Alone’. Next to sign up was Emily Haines of Metric. She caught the thrilling Tiësto DJ Experience in Ibiza last summer and again, didn’t hesitate – ‘Knock You Out’ is a euphoric tune that will cause floorquakes in the Balearic isles and rock festivals alike.

Securing the involvement of Kele Okereke, singer with Bloc Party, was initially more of a challenge. ‘Kele’s voice is so powerful on a dance track – I did a remix for Bloc Party, of the band´s new single ‘One More Chance’, and it really worked. Kele was a hard man to pin down. I was supposed to sit in the studio with him in Miami during this year’s WMC, but he got sick and had to cancel last minute. But I had written this weird piano track, an offbeat thing, and he really liked it, so we hooked up in London one Sunday afternoon a few weeks later. I played him the song and he just started singing with his guitar, mumbling a little bit then suddenly words came out of his mouth… and suddenly we had a track! It was amazing to see how this guy made something cool and creative right on the spot.’

The album’s lead single, meanwhile, is ‘I Will Be Here’, a hook-up with huge-selling Australian band Sneaky Sound System. It’s a big, bold party tune with a stirring house-diva vocal – and a song whose infectious immediacy reflects the instinctive manner in which Tiësto wrote it: he crafted the entire production in less than week.

Creating Kaleidoscope, the song that gives this colorful, shapeshifting album its entirely appropriate title, was more drawn-out. Tiësto had his heart, and his ears, set on securing the services of Sigur Rós singer Jónsi Birgisson. Tiësto flew to Chicago to track him down, then did the same in Brussels, before finally spending time in Amsterdam discussing what they might do together.

‘It was a crazy idea,’ he laughs. ‘If you listen to Sigur Rós you can’t imagine any relation to Tiësto. Maybe the melancholy of it, but that’s about it. Their music is so different and I think that Jónsi is one of the most creative artists in the world. But the funny thing was, I met him at a couple of times at shows, and there’s a lot more in common than I thought – Jónsi told me he used to be a big Iron Maiden fan as well, like I was! Then I noticed that he makes a lot of dance music at home on his own. So he’s not that far away from what I do, really.’

The result is a huge, progressive trance song, soulful and uplifting. ‘And Kaleidoscope is a great title for the album too. We’re mixing shapes and colors together to make something new.’

Say hello to a new Tiësto. Yes, he’s the world’s most popular DJ. But the ceaseless desire to innovate that has pushed Tiësto to the top of his game, propelled him to seek out some of the best musicians around, wherever in the world they – or he – happened to be. ‘I’ve worked with these handpicked artists because they´re people I admire hugely, and because they make my music better. It’s more fulfilling for me to work like this, but a lot harder and more challenging.’

In the end, admits Tiësto, he’s unsure how people will react to Kaleidoscope. ‘It is completely different to what I did before,’ he says cheerfully, adding that this is one of the reasons he´s set up an appropriately named new label, Musical Freedom, to release the album. ‘I’m introducing more and more flavors of what people know as Tiësto. This is a record you can enjoy at home, not just on the dancefloor. But what is very important to me, is that every single track on the album will work when I play out too.’

He’s not the world’s greatest DJ for nothing…

Arnej Biography

One of many talented producers that knows how to deal with soundscapes, beats and melodies, but has a sound like no other, is Canadian top producer Arnej. Look beyond the numerous signs of his musical schizophrenia and you’ll be surprised how well this music addict knows how to turn his tricks and hits into yet another diverse beat-beauty.

Arnej founded his success with tracks like ’Rendezvous’, ‘The Ones That Get Away’, ‘The Return’ and ‘They Always Come Back’, all heavily supported by the DJ elite and reaching the crowd through names like Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Ferry Corsten, Judge Jules, Pete Tong, David Guetta and Paul Oakenfold. Being tipped as favourite producer of 2008 by Armin van Buuren, receiving a nomination for ‘Best New Face of 2008’ at the Trance Awards, pouring out as many as 10 quality singles in this year alone, and remixing some of the most iconic names in trance, including Armin van Buuren, The Thrillseekers and Push aka M.I.K.E., have made Arnej’s prominence rise high and grow fast.

With Arnej’s first vocal track and collab with Josie and Jaren, ‘Strangers We’ve Become’, coming up in 2009, also being the first single of his upcoming artist album that’s set for release late 2009, a game soundtrack in the making and all the backup and support one might wish, Arnej is prepared for another year that will surely take his musical art to the next level.

DASH BERLIN
Dash Berlin is a true deejay at heart with a profound passion for the comprehensive culture of dance music. He is often described as an invigorating and charismatic newcomer, with the unique ability to leave a long-lasting impression upon his audience well after the night is over. Dash is one of those rare individuals that seem to apprehend the unwritten laws of the nightclub by nature. He keeps his ever expanding, nocturnal following alert, ecstatic and craving for more, with remarkable precision and skill. One could easily mistake him for a superstar deejay, but the truth remains that Dash Berlin is viewing the world through the same eyes as his public. “It’s virtually impossible to make progress without the continuing support of the people”, he said, humbly.

Dash Berlin, was born as Jeff X. Sutorius, on November in 1979, in The Hague, the Netherlands. A family with wide musical tastes surrounded him and because of his late father, who was a distinguished drummer in a jazz band; Dash became acquainted with the typical marks of rhythmic music at a very young age. While still at high school, he became a devoted fan of electronic music, regularly enjoying mix tapes that his older sister brought home from the clubs she worked at as a professional dancer.

In his late teens, Dash Berlin started working at a record shop and became a dedicated vinyl collector with a fascination for melodic, synthesized house music, subsequently known as “Trance”. Inspired by pioneering figures such as; Sven Väth, Oliver Lieb and Sander Kleinenberg, he slowly but surely started to develop his own innovative style of mixing and producing. His hidden work ethic seemed not to be about producing more, but rather less and differently. It is this vision that still sets him apart in a crowded and highly competitive scene.

Propelled by his passion, he literally performed everywhere, from nine-hour gigs in shopping malls to the notorious illegal Dutch warehouse parties. During his set on the world famous Love Parade, Dash decided to incorporate the word “Berlin” behind his artist name. ”It’s a dedication to that metropolis and her engaging, urban landscape,” he said, “Where I have seen more then a million people dancing on the streets, in the in the spirit of an ever-evolving Europe”.

In early 2006, Dash teamed up with fellow producers and close friends, Molijn & Kalberg, who were regular customers at his record shop. “These guys are amazing visionaries and astonishing studio wizards, they are the foundation of my sound” Dash enthused, “I still learn from them every day”.

Together they are designing an ambitious and unprecedented new division in Trance, critically acclaimed as the “Dash Berlin Sound”. Futuristic, scintillating, but above all, moving and emotive music that relates to the universal dance floor experience, shared by innumerable music fans from multifarious cultures around the globe. Although a vigorous believer in political awareness, the message of Dash Berlin is simple; “It’s all about having a good time again,” he stated, “The art of celebrating life resonates inside of everyone”.

In 2007, none other than Armin van Buuren revealed his newfound discovery to the world and featured Dash Berlin’s debut record “Till The Sky Falls Down” on his legendary “Universal Religion” album. The track became one of the most memorable, global anthems that year and remains one of the cultivated blueprints of the new Trance renaissance. The mood-filled black & white music video that complimented the radio mix was shot in the heart of Berlin proper. The clip grew to be a genuine labour of love, using the latest in digital cinematography, and successfully avoided the typical clichés of modern day dance music videos.

In the beginning of 2009, under the mighty wings of Armada Music, plans emerged to expand the Dash Berlin universe with his personal, freshly inaugurated, imprint called “Aropa”. It represents an eclectic high-quality outlet for Dash Berlin’s avant-garde productions, collaborations, his highly anticipated forthcoming album, as well as a solid foundation for rising talent and established like-minded artists. “The Aropa hallmark holds a deeper connotation too”, Dash revealed, “As it stands for the axiom of sharing art, inspiration and creativity.”

Stay tuned for more; hence Dash Berlin is the future…

The rise to great success with most top DJs starts with a dedication born out of an obsession for music. For Markus Schulz, his story was no exception. Originally from Germany, Markus moved to the USA aged 13 and quickly become engrossed in the break-dancing scene of the time. Although a talented mover on the floor, a chance to dominate the decks at a breaks party he helped organise became the pivotal moment when Markus decided upon the path of his life’s work. That dedication has since seen him storm up the charts to take his current place at number 8 in the prestigious DJ Mag Top 100 DJ poll 2008 – a position surely set to rise in 2009.

Markus always had a desire to meet the world and has continued to tour globally over the past few years, bringing his unique brand of progressive and melodic trance to thousands of clubbers from as far afield as Australia to Russia and as far away as China and Trinidad, that combined with criss-crossing in his own country of the USA. Markus also dominates the airwaves with his weekly radio show, Global DJ Broadcast and can be heard in over 30 stations worldwide. His very special “Ibiza Summer Sessions” debuted in summer 2006 to rave reviews. Wanting to give the listener the feeling of being part of the Ibiza summer, Markus planned each week with the hottest music and best DJ’s from the Balearic Islands. The mission was to bring Ibiza to those who couldn’t be there and to add to the experience of those who were. And it worked, with new stations around the world grappling to sign the show for their listening audiences. Through his radio show, Markus was able to reach out through the airwaves and meet even more people, thus touching their lives with his music.

Markus has built himself a stellar reputation as one of the global leaders in production as well as a world renowned DJ. His own label, Coldharbour Recordings has delivered over 60 A-list releases within 3 years. His commitment to his own work as well as his peers’ has seen numerous solo, collaborative and remix projects that have enabled him to boast an unrivalled discography, largely inspired by his travels and the people he has met. With his heart at the soul of every project, Markus consistently delivers hit after hit, most notably with ‘Without You Near’, ‘Daydream’, ‘Perfect’, and his latest chart stormer ‘The New World ‘– the booming trancer and theme tune to the infamous Transmission party that has clearly set the tempo for 2009 on fire!

Following phenomenal success with Miami ’05, Ibiza ’06 Markus continued his city inspired series to deliver us the hugely successful Amsterdam 08, which has been nominated for Best Full Length DJ Mix at this year’s IDMA’s taking place at the annual Winter Music Conference. The nominations don’t stop there – he’s also up for Best American DJ for the second year running… could this be his year? Next up, Markus continues his musical tour of the world with this year’s Canadian inspired ‘Toronto 09′, a mind blowing belter that celebrates the community spirit within the clubbing scene of the city. 2008 saw Markus release Progression Progressed, a rare reworking of his album Progression 2007 that brought together a collection of interpretations by some of the most talented producers on offer including: Mat Zo, Nic Chagall, Mark Otten and Monogato, as well as an inspired collection of remixes and new tracks from Markus himself. Toronto ’09 gives Markus the opportunity to bring his experiences from his tours and inspiration from his audiences to all fans worldwide with his unique stamp on things.

Schulz’s steadily growing collection of awards is testament to his influence on the dance music community, and ever increasing popularity. His relentless determination to bring new sounds and new experiences to his audiences and fans worldwide demonstrates a passionate enthusiasm that knows no bounds and firmly sets Markus up as one of THE forces to be reckoned with in dance for 2009 and beyond!

Now, with a few more wrinkles at 29 years old, he is considered by many a veteran of the industry, acquiring an ever growing army of loyal followers.
